names (LM Studio, Visual Studio, Mac Studio), feature names
(Recipe Studio, Fine-tuning Studio and its translations), and all
identifiers such as env vars, commands, paths and filenames.

Use "an" before Unsloth where the rename left the article as "a".
Restore the split brand where Unsloth and Studio render as two halves
of the full product name: the onboarding sidebar subtitle and the
IPv6 localhost warning. Scope two messages to the full name Unsloth
Studio where plain Unsloth was misleading: the AMD README bullet and
the CLI studio setup error.
* Studio: permission levels for chat tool calls (Ask, Approve for me, Off, Full access)
Replace the Bypass permissions on/off toggle with a four level permission
selector, available in Settings > General (new Permissions section above
Notifications), the chat settings panel, the composer plus menu, and a new
always visible composer pill.
Levels:
- Ask for approval: every local tool call pauses for allow/deny.
- Approve for me: only calls detected as potentially unsafe pause; the
python/terminal sandbox stays on.
- Off: never pauses; sandbox stays on (previous default behavior).
- Full access: never pauses and the sandbox is disabled. Still requires
the danger confirmation and is never restored across reloads.
Backend adds permission_mode to the OpenAI compatible and Anthropic
passthrough payloads and threads it through both tool loops. Auto mode
uses a fail closed classifier in tools.py: terminal commands must be on
a read only allowlist with no redirection or substitution, python code
is AST scanned for writes, exec, process and network use, MCP tools
auto run only with read only style names. Unknown tools always ask.
Legacy bypass_permissions and confirm_tool_calls keep their exact
behavior for existing API callers.

Off moves to the bottom of the level menu with a short description and
acts as the feature-off state: the composer pill is hidden entirely
while Off, and reselecting the active level toggles back to Off.

The permission pill uses a foreground based grey instead of the shared
muted pill color, so it reads darker in light mode and lighter in dark
mode. Full access keeps the danger yellow.

Chat settings panel: the Bypass permissions label sits on one line with
a full width dropdown underneath, styled like the other panel selects.
Tooltip shortened and wording uses Unsloth instead of Studio.

Extend the Approve for me classifier to catch write and exec paths that
slipped through:
- terminal: sort -o, tree -o, xxd -r, find -exec/-execdir/-ok/-delete
and find -fprint/-fprintf/-fls now ask; plain read-only forms still
auto-run. awk is no longer allowlisted since its program can write and
call system().
- python: from-imports of mutating names (from os import remove [as rm])
and star imports now ask.
Found by a fuzz and edge-case simulation matrix; pinned in
test_permission_mode.py.
* Studio permissions: split multi-line terminal commands in auto detection
A shell runs each line as its own command, but shlex reads newlines as
whitespace, so "ls\nrm -rf x" demoted rm to argument position and
auto-ran. Normalize newlines and CR to separators, and treat any all
separator token as a command boundary so runs of blank lines still
split. Found by the simulation matrix; pinned in tests.
* Studio permissions: address review feedback on auto-mode detection
Auto-mode (Approve for me) safety classifier hardening:
- Python: flag any reference to a mutating attribute, not only direct
calls, so indirect refs (f = os.remove; f(x)) and aliases ask. Detect
Path.open(mode) write modes and wrap the AST walk to fail closed.
- Terminal: match attached short output flags (sort -o/tmp/out) and keep
find context across grouping parens so find ( -delete ) asks.
- Both: ask before reads that escape the sandbox workdir via parent
traversal or hit credential paths (.ssh, .aws, id_rsa, .pem, etc.).
permission_mode plumbing:
- Fold permission_mode=full into bypass_permissions at the request model
so route-level confirm-gate guards see it as bypass.
- Reject ask/auto on the Anthropic Messages server-tools path, which has
no confirmation channel (mirrors the confirm_tool_calls rejection).
- Keep forced RAG autoinject in auto mode: the safe search_knowledge_base
retrieval never gates, so derive the skip from the real confirm need.
- Reset all local preferences now also clears the legacy confirm key so a
reset restores the fresh default instead of the old level.

Auto mode ("Approve for me") let a few mutating calls through as safe:
- os.open(...) always creates/writes a descriptor, so treat it as unsafe
even though builtin open in read mode stays safe.
- fd -x/--exec/-X/--exec-batch runs a command per match; scan for these
alongside find's -exec/-delete.
- tempfile writes artefacts and hands back writable handles, so importing
it now asks.
- Calling the result of a call (getattr(os, "remove")("x"), partials) is a
dynamic target the AST can't vet, so fail closed.
- An MCP tool whose name pairs a read verb with a mutating one
(get_or_create_issue, read_and_delete_file) no longer auto-runs on the
read prefix alone.
Also fold permission_mode="off" into confirm_tool_calls=False on both
request models so the non-stream route guard sees the disabled gate, and
drive the Confirm tool calls toggle off permission_mode="ask" so auto no
longer shows it on.

ask/auto fold previously set confirm on every non-provider request,
including a plain client-tool passthrough (client-supplied tools that
Studio does not execute), which then tripped the local-tool

- Honor CLI-forced tools when deriving the confirm gate. When a process
policy (unsloth run --enable-tools) opens the local tool loop without a
request-level tool signal, a permission_mode ask/auto request now
derives confirm at the route (GGUF and safetensors paths) so the mode
still gates the call, and a non-streaming ask/auto request is rejected
rather than running unprompted. A plain client-tool passthrough (no
local loop) is unaffected.

Three gaps where an omitted permission_mode did not behave as the
documented default ("ask"):
- The frontend only sent permission_mode / confirm_tool_calls /
bypass_permissions when a tool pill was on. A process policy
(unsloth run --enable-tools) can open the tool loop with no pill, so
the backend never saw the selected gate. Send the three permission
fields at the top level of every local chat payload instead.
- The backend read payload.confirm_tool_calls directly at the
pre-switch guard and both late per-backend derivations, so an unset
mode fell through as no-gate even for an explicit ask/auto. Add
_permission_mode_confirm(payload): explicit confirm_tool_calls wins,
explicit ask/auto engage the gate, off/full never prompt, and an
unset mode defaults to ask only where realizable (streaming), keeping
the legacy no-gate run for non-streaming unset requests.
- A forced ask/auto tool loop (CLI --enable-tools) with no stream now
400s at the pre-switch guard before evicting the resident model,
matching the existing confirm-without-stream rejection.

The previous change moved permission_mode, confirm_tool_calls and
bypass_permissions to the top level of the local chat payload. They had
lived inside a conditional spread, which is not subject to excess
property checking, so the fields were never declared on
OpenAIChatCompletionsRequest. At the top level tsc flagged
permission_mode as unknown (TS2322), failing the frontend build and
every job whose Studio install builds the frontend.
Add permission_mode and bypass_permissions to the request interface
(confirm_tool_calls was already present).

Two frontend consistency issues in the permission-level UI:
- The composer collapses tool pills to icons above four, but the count
left out the permission pill, which renders in every mode except off.
With one optional pill also shown the row reached five pills without
collapsing and could overflow. Count the pill when it is visible
(permission_mode != off).
- Entering Full access via setPermissionMode('full') or
setBypassPermissions(true) left confirmToolCalls at its previous value,
so a Full-access run (which sends confirm_tool_calls=false) could still
report confirmations as enabled in response metadata. Set
confirmToolCalls false at both entry points.

fd --base-dir= for --base-directory); a prefix of an unsafe long flag
now fails closed
- printf -v NAME, which assigns to a shell variable, so
printf -v PATH %s .; ls can rewrite PATH and run ./ls unprompted
- fd --base-directory / --search-path, which move the search root
outside the session workdir without any positional slash token
- an MCP tool whose compound read name carries a copy-style mutator
(read_and_copy_file, get_and_snapshot_volume): copy, duplicate,
import, export, download, backup, restore, snapshot, mirror
Also treat an omitted permission_mode as its documented default ("ask")
on the Anthropic Messages server-tool path. That branch has no
confirmation channel and already rejects explicit ask/auto, so an
omitted mode now falls into the same rejection instead of silently
running server tools unprompted, unless the caller opted out with
confirm_tool_calls=false (the legacy equivalent of "off"). off/full and
that opt-out still run; the two routing tests that relied on the old
implicit run now set permission_mode="off".

Four fixes from the latest review:
- Anthropic Messages server tools: an omitted permission_mode no longer
rejects a request that only runs safe server tools (web_search), so
existing Anthropic callers keep working. It still rejects an omitted
mode when a local tool (terminal/python) is selected, and an explicit
ask/auto is still rejected outright. off/full and a
confirm_tool_calls=false opt-out always run.
- Pre-switch confirm-without-stream guard: use
_explicit_studio_tool_loop_requested (the same predicate the
passthrough router uses) instead of the policy-inclusive
_effective_enable_tools, so a process --enable-tools policy no longer
turns a client-tool passthrough into a local-loop rejection.
- Auto mode now asks for `uniq INPUT OUTPUT`: uniq writes its second
file positional, so a second positional (numeric flag values skipped)
is treated like `sort -o`. A lone `uniq file` or piped `... | uniq`
stays safe.
- MCP mutation check now strips SQL comments before matching, so
DELETE/**/FROM and UPDATE/**/users (comment-as-whitespace) no longer
slip past the DML/DDL denylist.

Three pre-switch confirm-gate checks disagreed with how the tool
loop actually enters, so a valid request could 400 (or an invalid
one could evict the resident model) at the wrong point:
- The /chat/completions pre-switch guard only looked at explicit
request fields, so a process --enable-tools policy that forces the
loop on (request omits enable_tools, no client tools) slipped past
it and only 400ed after _maybe_auto_switch_model had swapped the
model. It now mirrors the router's own loop-entry gate
(_effective_enable_tools or mcp, tool_choice="none" disabling it
unless explicitly asked) while still deferring to client-tool
passthrough, so the policy-forced case is caught before the switch.
- The ChatCompletionRequest full/off fold treated enabled_tools by
itself as a local-loop request and set confirm_tool_calls=True.
The router never starts the loop on enabled_tools alone (it only
filters which tools run), so a non-streaming passthrough carrying
client tools plus enabled_tools 400ed instead of routing verbatim.
The fold now keys off the same enable_tools / mcp_enabled signals.
- The Anthropic /v1/messages unsupported-mode rejection (ask/auto,
or an omitted mode selecting terminal/python) ran inside the
post-switch server-tools block, so an invalid request evicted the
resident model before the 400. It now runs before the auto-switch,
determined from the requested server tools, like the neighboring
malformed- and mixed-tool guards.
Adds regressions for each: a policy-forced non-streaming ask/auto
guard rejection that never reaches the switch, an enabled_tools-only
passthrough that keeps confirm unset, and an Anthropic rejection that
precedes _maybe_auto_switch_model.

- Destructured string literals fold into the scanned path now, so
base, leaf = ('/etc', 'passwd'); open(base + '/' + leaf).read()
resolves to /etc/passwd and asks, like the single-assignment form
already did. The tuple/list unpacking branch tracked only aliases to
open; it now also binds literal and folded-path elements.
- pathlib name rewrites fold to the rewritten path:
Path('/etc/x').with_name('passwd').read_text() (and with_stem /
with_suffix) spell no literal /etc/passwd but resolve to it, so they
are folded and caught. Benign in-sandbox rewrites stay safe.
- hostname NAME (or -F/--file, -b/--boot) sets the hostname, so a
positional or a set flag asks; bare hostname and the display flags
(-f/-i/-I/...) stay read-only.
- date -s/--set STRING and the bare MMDDhhmm... positional set the
system clock and now ask; the display forms stay read-only (+FORMAT,
-u/-R, and -d/-r/-f whose following value is skipped so date -d
tomorrow is not mistaken for a clock-setting positional).

- Mapping-style %-formatted paths. '/etc/%(f)s' % {'f': 'passwd'} folds
to /etc/passwd and asks; a dynamic value or a non-literal mapping
leaves the NUL marker so /etc/<dynamic> still fails closed. The path
folder previously handled only tuple/scalar % right-hand sides and
returned None for a dict, hiding the sensitive segment.
- A read-named MCP database tool carrying PostgreSQL COPY. COPY ... FROM
bulk-loads a table and COPY ... TO writes a server-side file, so both
are matched as mutating queries like DELETE/UPDATE already were. A
'copy' substring in a column name stays safe (word boundary).
- logging file handlers. logging.FileHandler('out.log', mode='w') (and
the default append mode, RotatingFileHandler/TimedRotatingFileHandler/
WatchedFileHandler, and the bare from-import form) create or truncate
a file like open(..., 'w'), so they are classified as writer calls.
StreamHandler / NullHandler and logging reads stay safe.

* Fix writer aliases, GraphQL mutations, and auto server tools (review round 29)
- Auto-mode Python: an aliased writer or archive constructor is tracked
like the existing open alias, so from numpy import save; s = save;
s('out.npy', arr) (and z = ZipFile; z('a.zip', 'w'), incl. the
destructured forms) ask instead of running the write unprompted. A
benign builtin alias (x = len) stays safe.
- Auto-mode MCP: a read-named tool carrying a GraphQL mutation now asks.
query_graphql {"query": "mutation { deleteIssue(id: 1) }"} matches a
leading mutation keyword (GraphQL uses # comments, so it scans the raw
payload); GraphQL read queries stay safe.
- Anthropic /v1/messages: permission_mode "auto" no longer 400s a
safe-only server-tool selection. auto only needs a confirmation
channel for an unsafe call, so like the omitted default it runs for
web_search / RAG / render and rejects only when a gate-needing local
terminal/python tool is selected. ask still always rejects (it asks
per call, which this passthrough cannot honor). The rejection stays
ahead of the model auto-switch.

- asyncio process spawners (asyncio.create_subprocess_exec/shell and a

terminal blocklist, so they gate like os.system/subprocess.
- stdlib network clients imaplib / poplib / nntplib / xmlrpc(.client) /
webbrowser open outbound connections the sandbox does not namespace
off, so their import asks like the other network modules.
- a callable captured as a function or lambda parameter default
(def f(o=open): o('out', 'w')) now binds that parameter into the same
alias set, so the later write through it is gated. A benign default
(o=len) stays safe.
Also, permission_mode "auto" no longer 400s a non-streaming local tool
request whose selection is always-safe-only (web_search / RAG / render).
auto only prompts for a classifier-flagged call, so a safe-only auto
request needs no stream, while ask, an explicit confirm_tool_calls=true,
MCP, and an unrestricted or unsafe selection still require it. Applied
via a shared _confirm_gate_needs_stream helper at the pre-switch, GGUF,
and safetensors confirm-stream guards; the loop's per-call confirm flag
is unchanged.

* Catch brace-glob paths and attribute writer aliases; unfold auto (round 31)
- Terminal auto mode now runs the glob-sensitive scan over every
expansion candidate, so a brace-expanded glob (cat /e{t,}c/pass?d,
which bash expands to /etc/pass?d and then globs to /etc/passwd) asks.
Brace expansion alone spells no literal /etc/passwd and the glob only
resolves once the brace group is expanded, so scanning both together
is required. A benign brace + glob stays safe.
- Python auto mode now tracks a mutating attribute captured as a plain
name: s = np.save; s('out.npy', arr) binds a writer alias, a captured
.open bound method (p = Path('out').open; p('w')) fails closed on any
call since its mode position varies, and z = zipfile.ZipFile is gated
like the bare import. A benign attribute alias (x = np.mean) stays safe.
- permission_mode "auto" is no longer folded to confirm_tool_calls=true
on the request model. Folding it defeated the safe-only-selection
exception in _confirm_gate_needs_stream (an explicit confirm forces
stream=true), so a non-streaming safe-only auto request was rejected.
Leaving it unset lets the route apply the exception; the mode still
drives the loop's per-call gate. "ask" still folds (it gates every
call).

* Harden SQL/GraphQL/writer classification and passthrough guards (round 32)
MCP argument mutation detection (read-named query tools):
- CREATE DDL now matches modifiers and the broader object set, so
CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW, CREATE UNIQUE INDEX, CREATE TEMP TABLE,
CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW and CREATE FUNCTION ask.
- Stored-procedure invocation (CALL proc(...), EXEC/EXECUTE) and VACUUM
ask; a natural-language "call me back" stays safe via the trailing
"(" / ";" / end lookahead.
- GraphQL # comments are stripped before the mutation match, so
mutation # note\n { deleteIssue(id: 1) } no longer hides the mutation.
Python auto-mode classification:
- numpy.memmap / open_memmap and pandas ExcelWriter / HDFStore create or
truncate a file on construction, so they gate like open(..., "w").
- asyncio networking (asyncio.open_connection, loop.create_connection /
create_server and unix variants) opens outbound connections/listeners
the sandbox does not isolate, so it gates like socket.connect.
Terminal auto-mode: file -C / --compile writes a compiled magic database.
Routing:
- A JSON-schema response_format is guided-decoding passthrough, not a
local tool loop, so a --enable-tools policy no longer 400s a
non-streaming ask/auto structured-output request at the confirm guard.
- An explicit confirm_tool_calls=False opts out of the Anthropic Messages
server-tool gate entirely (it wins over the mode, mirroring
_permission_mode_confirm and the GGUF path), so it runs even under ask.

/ user_version=42 / foreign_keys(0), while the read-form PRAGMA journal_mode
stays safe), and load_extension() which loads and runs an arbitrary shared
library.
- Python auto mode now gates the remaining asyncio network entry points
(start_server, open_unix_connection, loop.create_datagram_endpoint,
sock_connect), os.setxattr / os.removexattr metadata writes, the gzip / bz2 /
lzma single-stream writers (GzipFile / BZ2File / LZMAFile, mode-gated like
ZipFile so a read stays safe), pandas to_xml, and the websockets client.
Benign controls (SELECT 1, read-form PRAGMA, asyncio.sleep, gzip read, numpy

the same fail-closed rules, each reproduced with a benign control:
- MCP read-named tools: DROP / ALTER now cover the same broad object set as
CREATE (DROP FUNCTION, ALTER INDEX, DROP MATERIALIZED VIEW); ATTACH is caught
without the optional DATABASE keyword via its quoted-path form; a
schema-qualified write PRAGMA (PRAGMA main.user_version=1) is matched; and a
GraphQL mutation carrying directives (mutation M @audit { ... }) is treated as
a mutation.
- Python auto mode: os.startfile (Windows program launch), asyncio
start_unix_server, and the socketserver framework now ask; a gzip/bz2/lzma
open imported under an alias (from gzip import open as gopen) is gated like
builtin open; and a dynamic path prefix that can form a sensitive absolute
root (open(chr(47) + "etc/passwd"), open(os.sep + "etc/passwd")) is treated as
sensitive, while a dynamic prefix with a benign suffix stays safe.
Benign controls (read-form PRAGMA, natural-language "attach ... as", "drop the
idea", SELECT dropped_at, query @cached, gzip read alias, dynamic prefix +

Another adversarial pass surfaced further consistent fail-closed gaps, each
reproduced with a benign control:
- Terminal: GNU time -o/--output/-a/--append truncate or append to a file with
timing output; time is a wrapper, so the flag is checked before the wrapped
command like env -C.
- Python auto mode: logging.basicConfig(filename=...) opens a log file for
write; operator.methodcaller("write_text"/...) hides a writer method behind a
string and is now treated as dynamic dispatch (like getattr/partial);
fileinput.input(..., inplace=True) rewrites a file in place (the default read
form stays safe).
- MCP read-named tools: UPDATE now matches quoted, bracketed, and
schema-qualified targets (UPDATE "users" / public.users / ONLY public.users /
[users] / `users` SET); SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE/DUMPFILE writes a server file;
and state-changing SQL functions inside a SELECT (pg_terminate_backend,
setval, pg_write_file, lo_export, ...) ask.
Benign controls (time ls / time -p, basicConfig(level=), methodcaller("upper"),
fileinput read, NL "update ... set", setval_col column, PL/pgSQL SELECT INTO

* Tighten auto-mode classifier comments
Collapse the multi-line rationale blocks in the permission classifier to one or
two lines each without dropping the exploit each branch closes. Comments and
whitespace only (no code change); the classifier tests are unchanged and pass.
* Retry transient SSE stalls in the tool-calling smoke probes
The tool-calling job flaked with a bare "TimeoutError: timed out": the
server-side python/bash probes stream over post_sse(), which (unlike
post()) had no transport-level retry, so a single stalled stream on a
shared CI runner hard-failed the whole step even though function calling
had already passed.
post_sse() now mirrors post(): a transport-level stall (stream open or a
mid-stream read timing out) is retried once with a fresh request capped
at 300s, while HTTP status errors still surface immediately. The
Linux _run_tool_probe caps each attempt at 360s and treats a stall that
outlives the retry as a failed attempt (rotate to the next seed) instead
of raising, and the web_search probe uses the same 360s cap. A genuine
server wedge still fails (the retry also times out), so real regressions
are not masked. Applied to the Linux, macOS, and Windows inference-smoke
workflows, which share the probe.
* Close five more auto-mode classifier gaps from review
Each reproduces with a benign control:
- Path constructor aliased through an attribute (P = pathlib.Path) now folds
like the bare-name alias, so (P('/etc') / 'passwd').read_text() asks while a
/tmp alias stays safe.
- Callable defaults that are not plain names now bind the parameter: an
attribute writer (def f(s=np.save)), an archive constructor, a captured .open,
and partial(open, mode='w') fold like the equivalent assignment; a benign
default (np.mean) does not.
- A dynamic piece inside a sensitive name (open('/et' + chr(99) + '/passwd'),
which folds to '/et\x00/passwd') now asks: the literals around each dynamic
segment are matched against a credential target with the segment as any run of
non-separator chars, so an all-dynamic ('1 + 1') or segment-spanning
(a + '/' + b) path stays safe.
- MCP read-named tools now ask on REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW and REINDEX; a
'refresh' column or natural-language 'refresh' stays safe.
- A writer/open alias handed to a higher-order invoker (map(open, names, modes),
starmap(np.save, ...)) is gated even without a direct call site; a benign
map(len, ...) is unaffected.

* Default tool pills off on model load so tool execution is opt-in
resolveToolsEnabledOnLoad turned the web-search and code pills on for
any tool-capable model when the user had expressed no preference. Default
them off instead, so tool execution is enabled only when the person
clicks the pill to turn it on; a saved preference (on or off) is still
honoured, so a user who already enabled tools keeps them on.
* Gate mark/subscribe MCP verbs and qualified higher-order writer invokers
- A read-prefixed MCP tool name carrying mark / subscribe / unsubscribe
(get_and_mark_read, get_and_subscribe) now asks; a 'mark' substring inside
one token (list_bookmarks) stays safe.
- The higher-order writer check now also fires for a qualified invoker
(itertools.starmap(open, ...), functools.reduce(open, ...)), matching the
bare-name map/filter form; the writer-check on the first arg keeps a benign
itertools.starmap(len, ...) or itertools.chain(...) safe.

* Close more auto-mode gaps and align the ask confirm fold across paths
Each classifier change reproduces with a benign control:
- MCP read-named tools now ask on reply / notify verbs (get_and_reply_email,
list_and_notify_users), on catalog writes COMMENT ON / SECURITY LABEL / LOCK
TABLE and CREATE|DROP|ALTER POLICY, and on state-changing PostgreSQL functions
inside a read-shaped SELECT (nextval, set_config, pg_notify, the advisory-lock
family). A 'comment' column, a 'locks' table, and a 'nextval' column prefix
stay safe; the natural-language NOTIFY/SET ROLE statement forms are left out
because SET/NOTIFY overlap ordinary prose.
- Python auto mode now gates loader.exec_module (runs a module's code), archive
extractall (zip-slip file writes), the ensurepip / venv modules (install pip /
build an environment), and pydoc.writedoc. The Hugging Face login token
(~/.cache/huggingface/token and stored_tokens) is now a sensitive path, while
the rest of that cache (model data) stays readable.
- ChatCompletionRequest no longer overwrites an explicit confirm_tool_calls=false
when permission_mode='ask': the fold only self-enables the gate when the flag
is unset, so an explicit opt-out wins on the chat path exactly as it already
does via _permission_mode_confirm and the Anthropic pre-switch guard.

* Gate sort -T, xxd outfile positional, and the legacy HF token path
- sort -T / --temporary-directory writes spill files to a caller-chosen dir,
so it joins -o / --output in sort's unsafe-flag set.
- xxd [infile [outfile]] writes its second positional, like uniq; xxd now uses
the same second-positional-write handling (xxd in.bin out.hex asks, xxd
in.bin and xxd -c 16 in.bin stay read-only).
- The sensitive-path regex now also covers the legacy ~/.huggingface/token
location (optional leading dot), not just ~/.cache/huggingface/token; an
unrelated dir like myhuggingface/token stays safe.

* Catch multi-char SQL mutation targets, globbed credential names, digit outfiles
Three fail-open gaps in the auto-mode classifier, each with a benign control:
- SQL: the trailing word boundary on the MCP mutation regex meant a bare \w
stopped at the first character, so TRUNCATE users, GRANT SELECT ON t, and
REVOKE ALL ON t (multi-character names) slipped through while single-letter
targets matched. Match the whole identifier instead, and accept an explicit
AS alias on UPDATE (UPDATE users AS u SET). The implicit-alias form is left
out because it is indistinguishable from the prose "update <noun> <noun> set".
A truncate_log column and a grants table stay safe.
- A glob that resolves to a credential basename anywhere (cat ~/.huggingface/tok?n
-> token, cat proj/.netr? -> .netrc, cat repo/.aws/cred*) now asks; the fixed
target list only covered a handful of home paths. notes/dra?t.txt and
token_counts.tx? stay safe.
- uniq / xxd counted file positionals but skipped every numeric token to ignore
a flag value, so a file literally named with digits (uniq 123 out) hid the
output positional. Track each command's value-taking flags and consume only
the value, so uniq -f 2 in stays safe while uniq 123 out asks.

* Isolate the permission-mode loop tests from process-global state
The loop-driving tests (auto/off/full/bypass) drove run_safetensors_tool_loop
against a process-global approval registry (state.tool_approvals._pending)
keyed by a single shared session id, and read os.environ. Other backend test
modules mutate both, some at import time, so in the full-suite ordering a stale
pending approval or a leaked env var could make the loop deny or skip a call
these tests expect to run. It passed when the file ran alone but failed only in
the complete tests/ run on CI.
Add an autouse fixture that snapshots and restores os.environ and the approval
registry around each test, and give every _drive call a unique session id so a
leaked approval can never collide. Attach a compact event-stream dump to the
loop assertions so any residual full-suite-only failure reports what the loop
actually did instead of a bare diff.

Close four fail-open gaps in is_potentially_unsafe_tool_call:
- terminal: tree/du (always recursive) and ls -R rooted at an absolute or
tilde path now ask, matching the existing grep/rg/find recursive-read gate;
relative walks stay safe.
- terminal: sort --files0-from=F reads the file list named in F, so it can
read arbitrary host files indirectly; added to sort's unsafe flags.
- python: track aliases of the higher-order invokers (m = map;
from itertools import starmap as sm) so an aliased invoker handed open/a
writer is still gated; a benign callable (map(len, ...)) stays safe.
- python: single-member archive extract (ZipFile/TarFile.extract) writes to
disk like extractall and is vulnerable to a crafted member path, so gate it.
Also update the stale _FakeExecuteTool in test_permission_mode.py to accept
the thread_id keyword that run_safetensors_tool_loop now forwards to
execute_tool after the main merge, which had broken the five tool-loop tests.

* Studio: normalize unknown permission_mode to 'ask' instead of a 422
The request models validated permission_mode with Literal[ask, auto, off,
full], so an unrecognized value from a newer UI/client was rejected with a 422
before the tool loops could apply their unknown -> ask fallback
(safetensors_agentic.py:464, llama_cpp.py:9001). That made the intended
forward-compat degradation unreachable at the API boundary for both Chat
Completions and the analogous Anthropic field.
Accept a plain string on both ChatCompletionRequest and AnthropicMessagesRequest
and normalize in a before-validator: None stays unset, the four known modes pass
through, and any other value degrades to the safest gate ('ask'), matching the
loops. Adds a regression test covering unknown/None/known across both models.

- terminal: xargs is no longer a safe wrapper. It appends arguments read from
stdin that the scan never sees, so `echo -o out /etc/passwd | xargs sort`
forwards to `sort -o out /etc/passwd` (a write + sensitive read) while only
the allow-listed literals are visible. Any xargs command now asks.
- terminal: ionice -p/-P/-u change the I/O priority of an already running
process / group / user instead of forwarding to a wrapped read-only command,
so `ionice -c 3 -p <pid>` now asks. ionice -c 3 <cmd> stays safe.
- MCP: gate ALTER SYSTEM, which persists PostgreSQL server configuration and was
not one of the DDL objects the mutation detector matched.
- MCP: a credential noun in a read-named tool (read_secret, list_tokens,
get_credentials, fetch_api_key) is a sensitive disclosure, so it asks even
without a mutating verb or a path/SQL argument. Scoped *_key nouns keep a
primary_key / keyboard lookup safe.
- render_html: no longer unconditionally safe. A static canvas still auto-runs,
but one whose HTML/JS reaches the network (fetch/WebSocket/remote script) asks,
since it can egress under the canvas CSP when artifact network access is on.
Its early provisional card is suppressed under the auto confirm gate, and the
confirm-without-stream guard now requires a stream when render_html is
selectable.
Adds regression rows and benign controls for each, and updates the render_html
provisional-card and confirm-gate tests to the new behavior.

Follow-ups on the previous classifier round:
- terminal: wc/du/find --files0-from (and find's -files0-from primary) read a
NUL-separated list of input paths from a file, the same indirect mechanism as
sort --files0-from, so a crafted list reads arbitrary host files past the
literal path/root checks. Gate them like sort.
- python: a namespace lookup through a dict-style call (f =
__builtins__.__dict__.get('open'), globals().get('open'), vars(x).get(...))
can return open/eval/a mutator, so poison the bound name like getattr/subscript
lookups already are. An ordinary dict .get or os.environ.get stays safe.
- render_html: broaden the network detector so a canvas that loads a resource
via CSS url()/@import, srcset, or a root-relative (/path) or protocol-relative
(//host) src/href is treated as networked, not just fetch/WebSocket/remote
script. Relative ./x and url(#id)/data: refs stay static/safe.
- Anthropic /v1/messages: drop render_html from the unprompted-safe server-tool
set. Since it can prompt (networked canvas) and this channel invokes the loop
without confirm, selecting it under ask/auto/omitted now rejects like
terminal/python; off/full (or an explicit confirm opt-out) run it.

- terminal: a glob that expands to a project .env (cat .e?v) now asks; .env
joins the sensitive glob-basename set, matching the literal-path gate.
- python: an open bound onto an attribute (box.f = open; box.f('out','w'))
is tracked by attribute name, and open invoked via .__call__
(open.__call__('out','w'), unwrapped to the underlying callable) is gated,
so neither slips past the name-based open-alias checks. Benign attribute
callables and .__call__ on non-writers stay safe.
- python: a namespace lookup via .get/.pop/.setdefault already covered the
builtins case; unchanged here.
- MCP: a mutating HTTP verb in a method/verb argument (get_url
{"method": "DELETE"|"POST"|"PUT"|"PATCH"}) now asks, so a generic HTTP
tool cannot mutate an external service unprompted; GET/HEAD stay safe.
- MCP: a credential/secret environment-variable value (get_env
{"name": "OPENAI_API_KEY"}) is treated as a sensitive read via the same
credential-noun match used for tool names; PATH/HOME stay safe.
- render_html: self-navigation sinks (location.assign/replace, window.open,
assigning a URL to (window.)location(.href)) join the network detector, so a
canvas that navigates itself to an external URL asks; location.reload() /
history.back() stay static.

* Studio: gate obfuscated canvas egress, sensitive-dir iteration, and MCP metadata-host reads
- render_html: strip block comments before the network scan so fetch/*x*/(...)
cannot hide egress, and match bracket-access forms (window['fetch'](...),
self['open'](...)). Line // comments are left alone so the // in an https URL
is not eaten. A comment-only canvas stays static.
- python: enumerating a directory outside the sandbox (Path('/etc').iterdir(),
os.scandir('/etc'), os.listdir('/home'), os.walk('/')) reads host filenames
the direct /etc/passwd checks would prompt for, so gate it when the target dir
folds to an absolute/tilde/sensitive path; a relative dir stays safe and an
unresolved dynamic dir is left to other checks.
- MCP: a read-named HTTP tool pointed at a cloud-metadata / link-local host
(fetch_url {"url": "http://169.254.169.254/..."}, metadata.google.internal)
reads instance credentials, so classify those URL arguments as sensitive,
mirroring the sandbox SSRF blocklist; ordinary and localhost URLs stay safe.

* Guard RoPE scaling against the transformers v5 buffer blank; honor extended factor
Add a family-agnostic guard that builds each rotary from a scaled config,
blanks its non-persistent buffers (what transformers v5 does on load), runs
loader._fix_rope_inv_freq, and asserts every buffer is restored to its scaled
value (llama3 and longrope). This catches the whole bug class, not just the
one call site, and is validated to fail on the pre-fix repair.
Also make LlamaExtendedRotaryEmbedding read the llama3 factor from the config
instead of hardcoding 8 (wrong for Llama-3.2, factor 32), falling back to the
Llama-3.1 defaults when built without a config.

* Raise stream deadlock-guard timeouts from 0.2s to 5.0s in passthrough tests
These asyncio.wait_for guards bound test setup and cross-task event
signaling that complete near-instantly on success; the 0.2s budget is a
latency assertion in disguise and times out under CI scheduling load
(seen on the 3.11 matrix leg while 3.10/3.12/3.13 pass the same commit).
5.0s matches the timeout used elsewhere in the suite and still fails fast
on a real hang. No test relies on the guard expiring.
* Extended rotary reads rope_parameters as well as rope_scaling
transformers v5 stores llama3 scaling under config.rope_parameters and
exposes rope_scaling only as a back-compat property. Reading that property
works on 5.0-5.13 (verified: factor resolves to 32 for Llama-3.2), but a
future release may drop the shim, after which the subclass path would fall
back to factor 8. Read either field so the factor survives the rename.
Adds test_extended_rotary_reads_rope_parameters_v5 (fails on the old
single-field read: rope_parameters-only config resolves to 8, not 32).

Set CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW to the loaded model's real context length (the value codex/openclaw already get via model_context_window / contextWindow). Omitted when the model reports no context length.
* Pin OpenCode/Hermes context window and set 90% compaction across agents
Feed every agent the server-determined sequence length (the value /v1/models reports from runtime_context_length) and a ~90% compaction threshold. OpenCode: a custom-provider model with no limit defaults to context 0, which silently disables auto-compaction, so set limit.context/output and scale the compaction buffer to 10% of the window. Hermes: pin model.context_length (it otherwise falls back to a 256k default when the server's /v1/models omits the field) and set compression.threshold 0.9. Claude: add CLAUDE_AUTOCOMPACT_PCT_OVERRIDE=90 alongside the window. Codex (model_context_window) and OpenClaw (contextWindow) already carried the window and auto-manage off it.
* Add `unsloth start pi` recipe
Pi was the only agent without a built-in recipe, so the agent-guides CI
hand-wrote ~/.pi/agent/models.json. Add a first-class `pi` command mirroring
the others:
- write_pi_config writes the session-scoped OpenAI-compatible provider config
(key in the config, like openclaw/opencode).
- pi() launches `pi --provider unsloth --model <id>` (Pi defaults to the google
provider, so the provider/model are pinned on the command line) with HOME
relocated for the session. Pi has no config-dir env var and resolves ~/.pi off
$HOME, so HOME-scoping keeps the user's ~/.pi untouched.
Migrate the agent-guides CI off the hand-written config onto the
`unsloth start pi --no-launch` path (connection + file-edit), with a crosscheck
for the provider api, so the documented recipe is exercised.
* Harden unsloth start for Windows and WSL agent launches
Address the Codex review on PR 6613:
- write_pi_config now pins the loaded contextWindow and a sane maxTokens so Pi
compacts instead of overflowing a small Studio context (it otherwise assumes
its 128000 default), matching the other agents.
- pi() sets USERPROFILE (and HOMEDRIVE/HOMEPATH when present) alongside HOME on
native Windows, where Node resolves ~/.pi via USERPROFILE rather than HOME, so
the session no longer reads or writes the user's real ~/.pi.
- The WSLENV bridge flags path-valued vars with /p so a Windows npm shim under
/mnt receives translated paths, while scalar vars (the numeric context window)
pass through untranslated. WSLENV is deduped on the bare name.
- _print_env prints the launch command with PowerShell-safe quoting so the inline
--settings JSON survives copy-paste on native Windows --no-launch.
Add tests for the WSLENV path flagging, PowerShell quoting, the Pi context
window, and the Pi USERPROFILE relocation.

It is easy to forget which agent spells "run tools without prompting" which way,

From a 10-reviewer pass over the PR:
- studio/frontend agent-command.ts: normalize bracketed IPv6 hosts. URL.hostname
returns "[::1]" for http://[::1]:8888, which never matched the "::1" loopback
checks, so the copied command embedded the placeholder API key for a local IPv6
server instead of the bare auto-minting command. Now [::1] is treated as loopback
like the CLI's is_loopback_url, so the command matches the CLI contract.
- pi(): also relocate USERPROFILE (and HOMEDRIVE/HOMEPATH) when running under WSL
against a /mnt Windows shim, not just on native Windows. Windows Node resolves
~/.pi via USERPROFILE, and the WSLENV bridge translates the path, so pi no longer
falls back to the user's real ~/.pi in that case.
- _yolo_command_flags: use .get so a config-based agent (or a typo) yields no flag
instead of a latent KeyError.
Adds tests for the WSL pi USERPROFILE relocation, the yolo unmapped-agent guard,

* start: split --model org/repo:variant so a running session is not evicted
`unsloth start <agent> --model org/repo:QUANT` failed against an already-running
Studio server and, worse, killed whatever model another session had loaded.
/v1/models lists a loaded GGUF under its bare repo id (e.g. unsloth/Qwen3-1.7B-GGUF),
so _resolve_model never matched the `:QUANT`-suffixed request. It then POSTed
/api/inference/load with model_path=org/repo:QUANT, which (a) Hugging Face rejects
("Repo id must use alphanumeric chars, '-', '_' or '.'") and (b) evicts the model the
other session was using, so a second 'unsloth start' in a new tmux/terminal tore down
the first. Re-running the command then attached to the now-empty server, which is why
it 'worked the second time'.
Mirror the org/repo:QUANT -> org/repo + --gguf-variant QUANT shorthand that
'unsloth run' and llama.cpp already accept, splitting it in _connect before we match or
serve. Matching now resolves against the loaded bare repo id (no spurious reload, no
eviction), and any real load uses a valid repo id plus gguf_variant. An explicit
--gguf-variant still wins; local paths and Windows drive letters pass through untouched.
The auto-serve path likewise spawns 'unsloth run --model org/repo --gguf-variant QUANT'.
* start: harden auth-key handling, codex teardown, and CI transcript redaction
Three review findings:
1. CI could leak a live key. agent-guides-drive.sh printed the raw
'unsloth start --no-launch' transcript (which carries export UNSLOTH_API_KEY /
ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN lines) to the Actions log on both the failure path and the
success path before redact() ran. Add cat_redacted() and use it for those two
prints, so the key is scrubbed on the way to the log while the on-disk file stays
intact for the env parsing that follows.
2. Outages masqueraded as bad keys. _key_accepted caught a broad Exception and
returned False, so a 5xx or timeout while checking a cached key looked like a
rejection: it discarded a good key and minted extra ones (local) or reported 'no
saved key' (remote). Only treat HTTP 401/403 as a rejection; let other errors
propagate so a real outage surfaces.
3. Codex preflight could leave the auto-started server up. _require_gguf_for_codex
runs after _connect may have auto-started Studio but before _run installs its
teardown finally, so a preflight rejection (e.g. a transformers-backend model) left
the server holding the port/GPU until the atexit backstop. Tear it down explicitly
at the point of failure.
Tests: a 5xx on a saved key surfaces without minting; a non-GGUF codex preflight
tears down the auto-served server.
* start: fix IPv6/portless studio URLs, Pi config-dir isolation, and Pi install recipe
Four review findings:
1. Pi ignored the session config when PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR was already set. Pi's
getAgentDir() reads process.env.PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR before falling back to
$HOME/.pi/agent, so a value inherited from the user's shell sent Pi to their real
config and skipped our provider/key (the HOME relocation alone was not enough). Pin
PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR at the session's .pi/agent dir; it is path-valued so the WSL
bridge translates it automatically.
2. Pi install hint dropped Pi's documented --ignore-scripts. Pi's README installs with
'npm install -g --ignore-scripts @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent' and notes it needs
no install scripts, so accepting the prompt now follows that safe recipe.
3. Auto-start ignored a portless UNSLOTH_STUDIO_URL. unsloth run binds to
'parsed.port or 8888', so http://127.0.0.1 launched the child on 8888 but the health
poll (and the returned base) still used port 80, stalling until the startup timeout.
Normalize the base to host:8888 (IPv6-safe) before starting and polling.
4. API-panel command mistook IPv6 loopback for the bare default. The bare 'unsloth
start' only probes 127.0.0.1:8888 on the IPv4 stack, so http://[::1]:8888 must carry
an explicit UNSLOTH_STUDIO_URL. Drop ::1 from the bare-default host set while keeping
it a loopback host (URL emitted, no key needed).
Tests: PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR is set to the session dir; _effective_base normalizes
portless/IPv6 bases; a portless UNSLOTH_STUDIO_URL auto-serves on :8888.
* start: apply fresh-review findings across CLI, CI, and the API-panel command
From a fresh multi-reviewer pass over the merged head plus the latest Codex bot review:
1. Load knobs now always consult the server. _resolve_model matched on model id alone,
so --gguf-variant / --context-length / --no-load-in-4bit / --tensor-parallel were
silently ignored whenever the id was already loaded (asking for UD-Q4_K_XL kept a
Q8_0 serving). With any explicit knob the CLI defers to /api/inference/load, whose
already-loaded dedup answers without reloading when variant and settings match, so a
second session running the same command still attaches without evicting the first.
2. OpenCode --yolo and the session model pin now ride in OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT. A
project's own opencode.json outranks OPENCODE_CONFIG, so a repo config could silently
override the session model and the --yolo permission block; OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT
outranks project config. The API key stays in the private file, never in printed env.
3. The --no-launch recipe's last line is a self-contained one-liner (inline VAR=value
assignments before the command, conflicting vars blanked). People copy just the last
line, and a bare codex/claude there ran against the user's real ~/.codex or Anthropic
credentials with zero isolation, e.g. inheriting a pre-existing damaged ~/.codex
state DB and blaming the recipe. The CI drive script scrubs the key from the one
'invoking:' echo this adds.
4. The auto-serve log is 0600 and the parent handle is closed. It sat world-readable in
the shared tempdir under a predictable name while carrying the minted sk-unsloth-
key from the unsloth run banner.
5. _key_accepted fails with a clean message on outages. Non-auth errors (5xx, network,
timeout) surfaced as a raw traceback; 401/403 still mean a rejected key.
6. _effective_base strips URL paths, and https loopback targets never auto-serve.
http://127.0.0.1:8888/studio polled /studio/api/health (404) and https://127.0.0.1
polled the wrong scheme, both spinning until the 15-minute startup timeout.
7. API-panel command: only literal 127.0.0.1:8888 earns the bare command. localhost can
resolve to ::1, which the bare CLI never probes, so it keeps UNSLOTH_STUDIO_URL.
8. CI artifact sweep covers redacted-configs/ and agent-workdir/, not just logs/.
Tests: 125 CLI tests pass (new coverage for each fix), 156 backend tests pass, ruff
clean. Adds an unsloth connect alias regression test.

Pi paints inline from wherever the cursor sits: its first render assumes a
clean screen instead of clearing or entering the alternate screen itself
(current Pi never emits a clear at startup). Launched under unsloth start,
that left the session starting mid-scroll beneath the connection output.
Clear the screen (click.clear, cross-platform, no-op without a TTY) right
before the Studio banner so Pi opens exactly one line down on a clean
viewport. Launch path only: --no-launch recipes and piped output are never
wiped, and alternate-screen agents are left alone.

* start: auto-override hermes' 64K context floor for small model windows
Hermes refuses to initialize when the served model's context window is
under 64,000 tokens, and a second copy of the same check rejects the
compression model mid-session. write_hermes_config previously pinned the
real window, so any small local model (e.g. 40,960) failed at startup
with manual config.yaml instructions.
For windows below the floor the recipe now claims 65,536 in
model.context_length, scales compression.threshold so compaction still
fires at 90% of the real window, and sets
auxiliary.compression.context_length to cover the mid-session check.
Windows at or above the floor keep the exact previous behavior.
* ci: install pi with --ignore-scripts, matching the start.py hint
The pi cell predates the pi recipe in start.py and still installed the
package with lifecycle scripts enabled, so CI stopped exercising the
exact command users are prompted to run. npm_retry now passes extra
flags through, the pi branch mirrors the install hint verbatim, and the
stale no-recipe comment is refreshed.
* ci: fail loudly when a relocation var is missing from connect output
The empty-string guards ran after appending /config.toml or /config.yaml,
so they could never fire: crosscheck_contract silently skipped its
contract checks and patch_hermes_tools died on the root path with a bare
traceback. Check the raw variable first and guide_fail with the real
cause.

Address three issues in the Gemma-native tool-call path:
- _quote_gemma_object_keys stopped a bare (unquoted) string value at the
first comma, so an argument like `location:New York, NY` was split
mid-value and the synthesized JSON failed to parse, dropping the whole
tool call. A bare value now ends only at `}` or a comma that begins the
next `key:` pair.
- parse_tool_calls_from_text scanned the entire response for Gemma markers
even inside a tool call already parsed from a `<tool_call>{...}` JSON
block, so a marker-like string inside an argument (data) was promoted to
a second, unintended tool call. Matches inside an already-consumed call
span are now skipped.
- _openai_passthrough_stream relied on _monitor_openai_sse_line to flag a
stream error, which returns early when monitor_id is None
(skip_api_monitor), so an upstream error chunk left saw_stream_error
unset and the synthetic-finish guard emitted a successful finish_reason
after a failed stream. Error chunks are now detected independently of API
monitoring.
Adds tests/test_gemma_tool_parse_edge_cases.py covering the comma and
marker-injection cases.
* Emit the terminal finish_reason chunk in GGUF streams
The OpenAI chat-completions GGUF tool stream and plain stream both built a
final ChatCompletionChunk carrying finish_reason but never yielded it, so
clients received the optional usage chunk and [DONE] with no chunk carrying
finish_reason. OpenAI-compatible consumers rely on that terminal choice to
distinguish stop/length/tool_calls. Yield it before the usage chunk and
[DONE], matching the other streaming paths.
* Parse tool calls in document order and skip nested markers both ways
Unify the JSON- and Gemma-format tool-call passes into a single
position-ordered scan:
- Calls are now emitted in byte order across both formats, so a mixed
output like `<|tool_call>call:create{...}<tool_call|> ... <tool_call>
{"name":"read",...}</tool_call>` executes create before read, matching
the order they appear in (tools run in returned order).
- A candidate that starts inside an already-accepted call's span is
skipped, in both directions: a JSON marker inside a Gemma argument and a
Gemma marker inside a JSON argument are treated as data, not promoted to
a second executable tool call.

* Harden Gemma array parsing, XML-parameter guard, and stream teardown
Address five review findings on the Gemma tool-call and OpenAI passthrough
streaming paths:
- parse_tool_calls_from_text collected JSON and Gemma markers without the
_inside_open_parameter guard, so a marker embedded in an existing
<function=...><parameter=...> value was promoted to a separate tool call.
Candidates that start inside an open XML parameter are now skipped, matching
the guard the XML-style parser already applies.
- _quote_gemma_array_elements preserved array elements starting with { or [
verbatim, so an array of objects (items:[{path:a}]) or a nested array failed
json.loads and the whole call was dropped. Object and nested-array elements
are now normalised recursively.
- _openai_passthrough_stream synthesized a finish chunk before a trailing
usage-only chunk and set saw_finish_reason, which made the EOF guard skip the
[DONE] sentinel. The EOF path now emits [DONE] whenever the upstream omitted
it, even after a finish chunk was already synthesized.
- /generate/stream drove generation through asyncio.to_thread with no
disconnect watcher, so a client disconnect during a long generation went
unnoticed until the next send. It now runs _await_disconnect_then_cancel
against the request, matching the other local streaming endpoints.
- _SameTaskStreamingResponse closed the body iterator with aclose() on a
send-side disconnect, raising GeneratorExit so the generators' cancellation
handlers (which finish the api_monitor entry) never ran. It now throws
CancelledError, falling back to aclose() when athrow is unavailable.
Extends tests/test_gemma_tool_parse_edge_cases.py with array-of-objects,
nested-array, and marker-inside-XML-parameter cases.

Two follow-ups on the streaming and tool-parse paths:
- _anthropic_tool_stream and _anthropic_plain_stream drove generation through
asyncio.to_thread(next, gen, ...) and only polled is_disconnected() between
events, so a client disconnect during prefill or a long generation/tool step
held the decode slot until the next event or a failed send. Both now run the
_await_disconnect_then_cancel watcher used by the other local streams, stop it
in finally, and break promptly when cancel_event is set.
- _GEMMA_NEXT_KEY_RE treated any comma followed by word-chars-then-colon as the
next key, so a bare value such as "meet at 10:00, 11:00 tomorrow" was split
into bogus keys. The next-key token must now be identifier-shaped (start with
a letter or underscore), so a comma before a timestamp, ratio, or other
numeric-then-colon text stays part of the value.

- parse_tool_calls_from_text only skipped markers that fell inside a span it
had already parsed successfully, so when an unquoted Gemma argument contained
a literal marker (code:<|tool_call>call:terminal{...}<tool_call|>) the outer
object failed to normalize, its span was never recorded, and the inner marker
was promoted to a standalone terminal call. Candidates nested inside any other
candidate's brace span are now skipped regardless of whether the enclosing
candidate parsed, so a marker in malformed outer data is never executed.
- /generate/stream skipped backend.reset_generation_state() when the disconnect
watcher set cancel_event between chunks: the loop broke and the finally's reset
is guarded on cancel_event being unset. A subprocess backend kept decoding
after the client left. The cancel-break path now resets the backend.
- _SameTaskStreamingResponse threw CancelledError / called aclose() on the body
iterator on a send-side disconnect, but neither runs the try/finally of a
generator that never started (early disconnect on http.response.start), so the
passthrough's eagerly-opened upstream httpx stream and cancel-registry entry
leaked. It now tracks whether the body started and, when it did not, runs an
optional unstarted_cleanup hook; the OpenAI passthrough wires it to close the
upstream resp/client and exit the cancel tracker.
Adds a nested-unquoted-marker regression test.

* Studio: serialize non-streaming responses once and pool the proxy client
Two safe latency wins on the OpenAI/Anthropic-compatible endpoints that leave
the streaming generation paths untouched (they keep Connection: close and
max_keepalive_connections=0 so a client disconnect still stops GPU decode).
1. Non-streaming responses used JSONResponse(content=model.model_dump()), which
builds a dict and then re-runs json.dumps. Serialize once with
model.model_dump_json() via a small _model_json_response helper. The body is
byte-identical (nulls preserved), about 3x faster to encode in a microbench.
2. The non-streaming completions and embeddings proxies built a fresh
httpx.AsyncClient per request. Route them through one pooled client
(core/inference/llama_http) closed on shutdown; streaming generation keeps
its own per-request close-only client. About 5x faster per call to the
local llama-server in a microbench.
The existing API-monitor tests for the non-streaming completions, embeddings
and passthrough paths now patch nonstreaming_client instead of httpx.AsyncClient
to match the pooled client, so they stay deterministic.

Review follow-up on the shared httpx client. It was a single module-global
instance, which has two lifecycle problems the per-request client did not:
1. After aclose() in lifespan shutdown, nonstreaming_client() kept handing back
the closed client, so a second lifespan in the same process (repeated
TestClient, embedded restart) failed with "client has been closed".
2. An httpx client binds its transport to the loop it first runs on, so reuse
from another loop could raise "Event loop is closed".
Hold one client per running loop in a WeakKeyDictionary, recreate when missing
or closed, and close all on shutdown. Single-loop production is unchanged.

Backend:
- Finalize the monitor entry as error on the chat-completions validation
reject paths (addresses the codex P2 comment around line 2337). Adds a
small _reject helper next to the api_monitor.start so each early-raise
in the GGUF tool-passthrough, non-empty-messages, GGUF vision/audio,
PIL image decode, and text-only model branches no longer leaves the
entry stuck running until eviction.
- _monitor_openai_chunk is now defensive about malformed shapes
(non-list choices, non-dict choice/delta) so a misbehaving provider
chunk does not raise into the streaming generator and abort the
user's response.
- _monitor_openai_sse_line accepts both data:value and data: value per
SSE spec; previously the single-space-only prefix silently dropped
tokens from compact emitters.
- openai_completions stream now keeps a residual buffer between
aiter_bytes chunks so a data: line whose newline lands in the next
TCP frame is reconstructed before parsing, instead of being dropped
by the per-chunk splitlines call.
api_monitor:
- duration_ms is derived from time.monotonic anchors and clamped at 0,
so NTP / manual clock steps no longer produce negative durations.
- finish() and fail() are idempotent: a second call (for example [DONE]
arriving after the generator's finally block already ran) no longer
moves finished_at or finished_monotonic.
- set_usage only derives total_tokens when no authoritative total has
been recorded, so a later partial-usage chunk does not clobber a
provider-reported total from an earlier chunk.
- _trim guards limit < 3 so the slice cannot underflow.
Tests:
- Adds regression coverage for the new idempotency, total preservation,
monotonic clock, and _trim guard behaviour.

When an empty assistant turn is dropped (a 0-token model reply, or a Stop-button
sentinel handled by _drop_empty_assistant_sentinels) the GGUF chat history can be
left with two user turns back to back. Strict Jinja chat templates (Gemma 3, some
Mistral variants) call raise_exception("Conversation roles must alternate ...") on
the first role-parity break, so llama-server returns a 400 and the thread becomes
unsendable.
Add _coalesce_consecutive_user_turns (merging only adjacent user turns, never
assistant/tool turns, preserving multimodal parts) and apply it in
_openai_messages_for_gguf_chat. The tool path inherits the fix for free because it
rebuilds from this same normalized history via _set_or_prepend_system_message. The
passthrough path is left untouched (it forwards messages verbatim). No-op for
already-alternating histories. Adds unit and end-to-end coverage.

The Allow / Always allow / Deny controls only lived in the fallback tool
card, but the built-in tools (web search, python, terminal, code
execution, image generation) render with their own components and so
never showed the buttons. Those calls paused after tool_start with no way
to approve them, hanging until the 1 hour timeout. Only MCP tools, which
use the fallback renderer, actually worked.
Render the controls for every tool card by wrapping each registered tool
component (and the fallback) in thread.tsx with a shared
ToolConfirmationControls, so the gate applies uniformly.
Also make the handshake robust:
- The gate keys on a per-call approval_id minted by the backend and
echoed in tool_start, instead of session_id alone, so a stale or
concurrent confirmation can no longer resolve the wrong call.
- The approval slot is registered before tool_start is yielded, closing
the race where a fast click or an auto "Always allow" could reach the
backend before the waiter existed.
- The frontend resolves with the same session id the request was sent
with (plus the approval_id), fixing the new-thread mismatch where the
confirmation targeted a different session than the blocked stream.
- The confirm endpoint returns {resolved}; the UI keeps the buttons and
shows a retry hint until the backend confirms a match, instead of
hiding them on a failed or mistargeted post.
- The gate runs after the disabled-tool and duplicate-call checks, so a
call that will not execute is not put up for approval. A denied call is
still excluded from duplicate detection, so re-issuing and approving it
works.
- "Always allow" is scoped per session to match the backend gate.
Add backend tests for the approval registry, the SSE no-deadlock
handshake, and the loop integration (allow, deny, disabled, duplicate,
re-issue after deny).

and overwrote slot["decision"] in the window before the waiter reads it and
pops the slot, so a duplicate or out-of-order POST could flip an Allow to Deny

already set so the first decision wins. Adds a regression test.

* Studio: report the real llama-server context window and add an opt-in overflow policy for OpenAI-compatible serving
A community report showed OpenCode failing tool calls every few minutes
against Studio's OpenAI-compatible API while the same GGUF was stable on
LM Studio. Root cause: Studio advertises the requested context length, but
llama-server can allocate less (memory-fit step on small GPUs, --parallel
slot split), so clients budget against a window that does not exist. Their
generations truncate mid tool call at the real wall (finish_reason=length
with cut JSON arguments) and eventually the prompt itself exceeds the real
window, returning a 400 that agentic clients treat as non-retryable.
Changes:
- After llama-server health, read default_generation_settings.n_ctx from
/props and adopt it whenever it is below Studio's computed context, with
a warning. The load response, status route, UI value, and the passthrough
max_tokens ceiling all become honest automatically.
- Expose context_length and max_context_length on /v1/models so clients can
budget against the enforced window.
- Accept empty role=tool content (commands with no output are routine in
agentic loops; OpenAI and llama-server both accept it) instead of a 400.
- Add context_overflow=truncate_middle (per request, or server-wide via
UNSLOTH_CONTEXT_OVERFLOW=truncate_middle): on exceed_context_size_error
the passthrough drops whole middle turn-groups (system prompt, first turn,
and recent turns kept; tool calls stay paired with their results), clips
oversized contents middle-out when group-dropping is not enough, clamps
max_tokens to the generation headroom, and retries. Default stays 'error'
with code=context_length_exceeded so clients running their own compaction
keep full control.

Two launch-flag gaps caused the advertised vs allocated divergence at the
source:
- llama-server enables --kv-unified only when the slot count is auto; Studio
always passes --parallel N, which silently splits -c into per-slot windows
of -c/N. Pass --kv-unified when N > 1 so a single request can use the full
advertised window (same total KV memory, shared pool).
- with --fit on the fit step may set ctx as low as 4096; pass
--fit-ctx <requested> for explicit requests so fit offloads or fails into
the existing --fit off retry instead of silently shrinking the window.
Both flags are gated on --help capability probing so older builds keep the
current behavior, where the /props readback remains the backstop. Verified
live: -c 98304 --parallel 4 now serves per-slot n_ctx 98304 (was 24576),
48k-token requests pass through the passthrough, and the readback warning no
longer fires.

Preserves per-turn OpenAI image_url content parts in the standard GGUF /v1/chat/completions path so multi-image chat history keeps each image attached to its original turn. Legacy top-level image_base64 is injected as a synthetic image_url part only when no message-level image exists. Tool use is disabled whenever any GGUF image is present. Fixes#5470.
* studio: scope cancel-cleanup to in-flight tmp dirs; walk back tool_call_id
Two follow-ups to #5375's training and chat hardening.
_cleanup_cancelled_checkpoints used to rmtree every checkpoint-N
directory on Cancel. That is the opposite of what the user expects.
A user cancelling an 8h run with save_steps=2000 loses every
completed checkpoint they could have resumed from. The 67 MB residue
the audit memo flagged is the HF Trainer atomic-rename partial
(tmp-checkpoint-N), not the completed ones. The cleanup now targets
only tmp-checkpoint subdirs; completed checkpoint-N directories are
user-owned and stay. Symlinked output_dir and symlinked children are
skipped so the realpath containment cannot be levered into deleting
arbitrary content via a symlink trick.
ChatMessage._validate_role_shape stamped a random secrets.token_hex
id on tool messages with no tool_call_id. That id is uncorrelated
with the prior assistant tool_calls id, so strict passthrough
backends (OpenAI, Anthropic) reject the request as orphaned and
llama.cpp treats the tool result as "no preceding call" and
hallucinates. The synthesis moves up to ChatCompletionRequest, where
the whole conversation is visible: for each tool message missing an
id we walk back to the most recent assistant turn with tool_calls
(stopping at user turns), prefer a function.name match, otherwise
take the first unconsumed tool_call. Synthesis is the fallback when
no candidate assistant turn exists, preserving the prior round-trip
guarantee for orphaned tool messages.
Tests:
- test_cleanup_cancelled_checkpoints.py (new): pins that completed
checkpoint subdirs survive, tmp-checkpoint partials are removed,
non-int suffixes (checkpoint-final, checkpoint-best) are left
alone, output_dir outside outputs_root is refused, symlinked
output_dir and symlinked child are both skipped, missing dir is
a no-op.
- test_inference_model_validation.py: 6 new walkback cases covering
name-match preference, first-unconsumed fallback, explicit-id
passthrough, multi-tool-result pairing, synth-on-no-parent, and
no-cross-user-turn invariant.
- test_openai_tool_passthrough.py: the two ChatMessage-level
synth-on-missing tests are rewritten to assert that the per-
message validator now leaves tool_call_id untouched; resolution
coverage lives in the request-level tests above.

Reviewer follow-ups to the training-cleanup + tool_call_id walkback PR.
tool_call_id walkback: a mixed assistant turn with [call_a, call_b]
followed by a tool result that carried tool_call_id="call_a" and a
sibling tool result with no id resolved to ['call_a', 'call_a']
because the explicit id never reserved call_a in the consumed set.
Added a pre-pass over the message list that walks back from every
role="tool" message carrying an explicit id and marks the matching
(asst_idx, tc_idx) consumed, then the missing-id walkback runs against
that pre-populated set. The second result now resolves to call_b.
While here, also harden the function-shape check: if a provider
ships a malformed tool_call where `function` is a string rather than
a dict, the old `(tc.get("function") or {}).get("name")` raised
AttributeError on the string's .get; now isinstance-gated so the
walkback falls through to the fallback id without raising.
Cancel cleanup: `tmp-checkpoint-*` is too broad. HF Trainer's
in-flight partials are always `tmp-checkpoint-<integer-step>`, so
constrain the cleanup regex to `^tmp-checkpoint-\d+$`. A user folder
named `tmp-checkpoint-final`, `tmp-checkpoint-backup`, or
`tmp-checkpoint-user-notes` is now preserved.
ChatMessage docstring still pointed at the pre-PR contract that
required `tool_call_id` on every role="tool" message. Updated to say
missing ids are accepted at message scope and resolved at
ChatCompletionRequest scope. Inline comment above the cancel-cleanup
call now describes the actual behaviour (in-flight tmp partials,
completed checkpoints preserved).
Test:

The schema and regression test for ChatCompletionRequest.stream were
already corrected to default `false` (matching OpenAI's spec), but the
route docstring still claimed streaming was the default -- misleading
for anyone reading the source while debugging the original report.
Updates the docstring to reflect the actual behavior, adds an explicit
note pointing to #5047, and tags the existing regression test with the
issue reference and the .NET / System.Text.Json client class so the
intent survives future cleanup.

Two follow-ups on review feedback:
- Drop "(see #5047)" from the openai_chat_completions docstring so the
internal issue number doesn't leak into the FastAPI-generated
OpenAPI / Swagger schema. The reference now lives in a code comment
next to the actual `if payload.stream:` branch, where it's most
useful for the next person debugging the same class of report.
- Add test_post_without_stream_field_decodes_to_stream_false_over_http:
a TestClient-based wire-level guard that POSTs a body without
`stream` (the exact shape naive curl / .NET / System.Text.Json
clients send) and asserts both that the request deserialises into
stream=False *and* that the response Content-Type is
application/json, never text/event-stream. The existing
constructor-level test would silently miss regressions introduced
by middleware or alias rewrites that mutate the body before the
pydantic model is built.

* studio: contain export and dataset paths under their configured roots
resolve_under_root and resolve_dataset_path previously returned absolute
paths unchanged, so an authenticated client could supply
save_directory="/tmp/escape" (or any other absolute path) and have the
exporter drop adapter files anywhere the server user could write. This
turned up during a recent audit pass where an authenticated POST to
/api/export/export/lora with save_directory="/tmp/lora_escape_test"
returned 200 and wrote adapter_model.safetensors, adapter_config.json,
and tokenizer files under /tmp.
The fix is two-layered:
storage_roots.py adds an _assert_contained(resolved, root) helper that
runs after path resolution and rejects any result whose realpath does
not sit under realpath(root). resolve_under_root now rejects '..'
segments and null bytes outright, and only accepts absolute inputs when
they are already inside the configured root (internal call sites that
re-resolve a stored absolute path stay idempotent;
worker.py:resolve_output_dir(output_dir) etc. continue to work).
resolve_dataset_path picks up the same containment rule, scoped to the
three dataset roots.
models/export.py adds field_validator("save_directory", mode="before")
to ExportCommonOptions and ExportGGUFRequest so bad input fails fast at
422 with a clear message rather than a 500 deep inside the resolver.
The validator rejects empty/whitespace, null bytes, control chars,
strings longer than 255 chars, absolute paths, and '..' segments.
routes/export.py:_export_details now returns os.path.relpath(output_path,
exports_root()) so the Export Complete dialog and /api/models/loras no
longer leak the absolute install prefix to the UI; the basename is
used as a last-resort fallback.
Verified end to end:
- POST /api/export/export/lora {"save_directory":"/tmp/foo"} -> 422
"save_directory must be a name or relative path under the export
root; absolute paths are rejected". /tmp/foo is not created.
- "../../etc/escape" -> 422 "may not contain '..' segments".
- save_directory="my_subdir" -> still accepted (400 only because the
test had no checkpoint loaded yet, not because of validation).
- Internal idempotent re-resolve via resolve_export_dir(absolute path
that is already under exports_root) returns the same path unchanged.
* studio/sandbox: harden bash + python tool execution
The sandboxed Bash and Python tool channels in Chat ran with a thin
preexec hook (PR_SET_NO_NEW_PRIVS + RLIMIT_FSIZE only). Bash had a
small word blocklist; Python had an AST safety pass aimed at
signal-tampering and shell-escape primitives. An audit pass showed
several gaps that a tool-calling model could trigger inadvertently:
- bash curl/wget/nc reached AWS IMDSv2 and returned live STS
credentials for the instance role.
- python "import socket; s.connect((169.254.169.254, 80))"
reached the same endpoint regardless of the bash blocklist.
- "cat /etc/passwd" was blocked at the bash side (because "passwd"
is in the blocklist), but "open('/etc/passwd').read()" in Python
happily returned its contents.
- "chr(115)+chr(117)+chr(100)+chr(111)" style dynamic-arg
construction slipped through the AST shell-escape check.
- The supervisor used proc.kill() on timeout, which only signals
the immediate pid; bash-backgrounded children survived. A fork
bomb could spawn for the full 300s timeout window.
- Session work directories under ~/studio_sandbox/<id>/ were
created with default umask (0o755), so any other UID on the host
could enumerate them.
- session_id sanitisation used a one-shot str.replace("..",""),
which is non-iterative and a small footgun.
This commit takes a conservative middle path: the sandbox still
runs as the Studio UID with no namespace tricks where the kernel
disallows them, but every chokepoint is tightened.
_sandbox_preexec now:
- calls os.setsid() so children share a process group; the
supervisor uses os.killpg(SIGKILL) on timeout/cancel so
backgrounded children die with the parent (new _kill_process_tree
helper, wired into _cancel_watcher and both _bash_exec /
_python_exec timeout branches).
- calls os.umask(0o077) so files the child writes default to 0o600.
- applies PR_SET_PDEATHSIG=SIGKILL so an orphaned child dies if
Studio exits.
- best-effort unshare(CLONE_NEWNET) for a private network namespace
(failure is logged and swallowed; defense-in-depth is still in
place via the bash blocklist and the AST checker below).
- sets RLIMIT_NPROC=10000 (tunable via UNSLOTH_STUDIO_SANDBOX_NPROC),
RLIMIT_AS=8GB, RLIMIT_CPU=300, RLIMIT_NOFILE=1024. The 10k NPROC
figure is chosen to sit well above the ~500 LWPs a healthy Studio
+ llama-server combination already uses while still capping a
runaway fork bomb. NPROC counts LWPs per real UID, so a lower
figure (e.g. 256) starves legitimate bash forks
("bash: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable").
_get_workdir:
- rejects session_id that doesn't match [A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,64};
non-matching values bucket into a shared "_invalid" dir.
- chmod 0o700 on both the workdir and on ~/studio_sandbox/ so
other UIDs cannot read another session's contents.
_BLOCKED_COMMANDS_COMMON gains: doas, pkexec, halt, poweroff, curl,
wget, nc, ncat, netcat, socat, ssh, scp, sftp, rsync, eval, source.
The intent is to keep general bash usage working (echo, ls, pipes,
loops, for, head, etc.) while denying the obvious egress and
escalation paths.
The AST checker (_check_signal_escape_patterns) is split into the
existing shell/signal/loop checks plus a new narrow IO denylist:
- Always flag non-literal args to anything in _SHELL_EXEC_FUNCS,
not just _STRING_SHELL_FUNCS. Closes the dynamic-arg bypass.
- Reject calls to socket.create_connection, socket.socket().connect,
urllib.request.urlopen, http.client.HTTP*Connection, requests.*,
httpx.* whose literal host argument is in a cloud-metadata
denylist (169.254.169.254 + 169.254.* + 100.64.*, plus the
GCP/Alibaba/ECS metadata hostnames and IPv6 link-local). Public
hosts (example.com, huggingface.co, ...) still work. Dynamic
hosts cannot be statically blocked; mitigated by the bash
blocklist + the netns where the kernel allows it.
- Reject literal open("/etc/passwd"), /etc/shadow, /etc/sudoers,
/etc/ssh/*, and /proc/<pid>/environ. Other files
(/etc/os-release, /etc/hostname, /tmp/*, user dirs) still work.
The _check_code_safety summariser is updated to include the new
network_calls and sensitive_file_reads buckets in its error string.
Regression-checked: echo, sleep, ls /tmp, for loops, piped helpers
(echo a | tr a A), urllib.request.urlopen("http://example.com"),
socket.getaddrinfo("example.com",80), open("/etc/os-release"),
open("/tmp/...","w") all still succeed. curl, wget, nc, ssh, rm,
socket.create_connection(("169.254.169.254",80)),
open("/etc/passwd"), open("/proc/self/environ") all correctly
blocked.
* studio: rate-limit login, rotate refresh tokens, add logout, security headers, gate bootstrap injection
A pass over the auth surface found a cluster of related issues that this
commit closes together.
Login (routes/auth.py):
- Add an in-memory per-IP login rate limiter. Five failed POSTs to
/api/auth/login inside a 60s window produce 429 with Retry-After.
A successful login clears the bucket. Previously 30 wrong passwords
in under one second was accepted as 30x 401, which combined with
the (now fixed) admin-username leak from /api/auth/status made
brute-force trivial against a small password.
Logout (routes/auth.py):
- New POST /api/auth/logout returns 204 and calls
storage.revoke_user_refresh_tokens(subject) so the refresh token
is no longer valid. Previously POST /api/auth/logout returned 405
and there was no way to invalidate refresh tokens short of
changing the password. Frontend session.ts already calls
clearAuthTokens() to drop localStorage; the new endpoint lets the
client also tell the server to revoke server-side state.
Refresh-token rotation (routes/auth.py + auth/storage.py):
- New storage.consume_refresh_token(token) atomically validates +
deletes a refresh token, returning (username, is_desktop). The
/api/auth/refresh handler now mints both a new access AND a new
refresh token; the supplied token becomes invalid. Replaying a
consumed refresh returns 401 "Invalid or expired refresh token".
The previous refresh_access_token helper is left in place for
callers that intentionally want the non-rotating shape; nothing
in the route layer uses it now.
/api/auth/status no longer leaks default_username (models/auth.py +
routes/auth.py):
- AuthStatusResponse.default_username becomes Optional[str] with a
None default; the handler always returns None. The frontend already
hardcodes HIDDEN_LOGIN_USERNAME = "unsloth" (auth-form.tsx:82), so
no UI change is required.
window.__UNSLOTH_BOOTSTRAP__ no longer auto-injects (main.py):
- _inject_bootstrap is now opt-in via the
UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP env var. The previous default
(inject whenever requires_password_change is true) embedded the
plaintext bootstrap password into the first-boot HTML for any
caller that hit /, /change-password, or any unknown SPA path.
Browser extensions and any XSS payload on the page could read it
trivially. With the new gate the bootstrap password lives only in
the auth/.bootstrap_password file (mode 0o600) where it has always
been; users typing it into a current-password field is the right
UX. routes/auth.py:change_password also clears
app.state.bootstrap_password defensively.
Security headers + server fingerprint (main.py + run.py):
- New SecurityHeadersMiddleware adds Content-Security-Policy,
X-Frame-Options: DENY, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff,
Referrer-Policy: no-referrer,
Permissions-Policy: camera=(), microphone=(), geolocation=(),
interest-cohort=(), and stamps server: unsloth-studio so the
generic uvicorn banner no longer fingerprints the stack. The
uvicorn.Config gains server_header=False so it stops emitting its
own Server header.
/api/health minimisation (main.py):
- Unauthenticated GET /api/health returns just
{"status":"healthy","timestamp":...} so load-balancer liveness
probes keep working without leaking version, device_type,
chat_only, desktop_protocol_version, or studio_root_id to
arbitrary callers. A request that presents a valid Bearer token
still gets the full diagnostic payload so internal launchers and
sibling-Studio detection (which compares studio_root_id) keep
working.
Verification:
- 30 wrong-password POSTs to /api/auth/login -> first 5 = 401, 6th
through 30th = 429.
- POST /api/auth/logout with a fresh token -> 204. The matching
refresh token then fails 401.
- Login -> R1; /api/auth/refresh with R1 -> new access + R2 (R2 !=
R1); /api/auth/refresh with R1 again -> 401; /api/auth/refresh
with R2 -> still succeeds once and rotates again.
- curl /api/auth/status -> default_username: null.
- curl http://127.0.0.1/ does not contain __UNSLOTH_BOOTSTRAP__.
- curl -I / shows CSP, X-Frame-Options: DENY,

- Existing /api/system, /api/models/list, /api/train/status,

all still return 200 after the changes (regression smoke).

This commit lands the main.py-side changes that share a single
middleware-registration spot. They are kept together because every
change here is either (a) a top-level middleware definition that has
to be added next to LoggingMiddleware, or (b) a route handler at the
same file-level.
SecurityHeadersMiddleware (Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options:
DENY, X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff, Referrer-Policy: no-referrer,
Permissions-Policy, server: unsloth-studio). The previous responses
emitted no CSP, no XFO, no Referrer-Policy and were stamped
server: uvicorn.
MaxBodyMiddleware rejects POST/PUT/PATCH on the inference / dataset /
data-recipe / train / export prefixes when Content-Length exceeds
UNSLOTH_STUDIO_MAX_BODY_MB (default 100). The audit hit this by
attaching a 50 MB plain-text file to a chat message and watching
Studio base64-encode it into the JSON body; uvicorn has no enforced
cap so the only previous guard was the per-file 50 MB ceiling that
data-recipe upload routes already enforce. The new middleware extends
that ceiling to the OpenAI-compat path that the Chat attachments
flow through. Verified: a 200 MB JSON POST to /v1/chat/completions
returns HTTP 413 "Request body too large (209,715,264 bytes; max
104,857,600)". A small valid request continues to reach the handler.
_inject_bootstrap is gated behind UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP.
The previous default was to inline window.__UNSLOTH_BOOTSTRAP__ =
{username, password} into the first-boot HTML whenever
requires_password_change was true, which exposed the plaintext
bootstrap password to any browser extension, page script, or LAN
caller on -H 0.0.0.0. The bootstrap password remains in the on-disk
.bootstrap_password file (mode 0o600) where it has always lived;
users typing it into a current-password field is the right UX.
/api/health unauthenticated returns {"status":"healthy","timestamp":
...} only; the previous payload (version, device_type, chat_only,
desktop_protocol_version, supports_desktop_auth, studio_root_id,
native_path_leases_supported) is preserved for callers that present

/recipes -> /data-recipes 308 redirect. The Data Recipes page lives
at /data-recipes; users typing /recipes hit the SPA catch-all and
saw "Not Found". The redirect also preserves any tail path, so
/recipes/<rest> -> /data-recipes/<rest>.
Verified end to end with curl: CSP / XFO / X-Content-Type-Options /
Referrer-Policy / Permissions-Policy all present on /, server header
is now unsloth-studio (uvicorn's own banner is suppressed via
server_header=False in run.py from the auth-batch commit). Followed
the /recipes redirect lands on the SPA HTML.
* studio: bound TrainingStartRequest hyperparameters at the schema level
POST /api/train/start accepted any value for learning_rate, batch_size,
max_steps, max_seq_length, warmup_steps, warmup_ratio, num_epochs,
save_steps, weight_decay, gradient_accumulation_steps, lora_r,
lora_alpha and lora_dropout, including -1, 0, 1e9, and non-numeric
strings like 'abc' or 'two' (which silently coerce to 0 in the
trainer). Probing showed the API returning 200 to learning_rate=-1
and batch_size=0; only max_steps had any partial clamping.
This commit adds field_validator on every numeric hyperparameter.
Bounds are chosen wide enough to span realistic single-host
configurations (B200 with 180 GB of memory comfortably fits the
upper end) while rejecting the values that always produce broken
training:
- learning_rate: parses str/float, requires 0 < lr < 1.0. Non-numeric
input raises with "learning_rate must be parseable as float (got
'abc')" instead of silently coercing to 0.
- batch_size: [1, 1024].
- gradient_accumulation_steps: [1, 4096].
- num_epochs: [1, 1000].
- max_steps: [1, 1_000_000].
- max_seq_length: [1, 131072].
- warmup_steps: [0, max_steps].
- warmup_ratio: [0.0, 1.0].
- save_steps: [0, 1_000_000].
- weight_decay: [0, 10] (typical 0..0.1).
- lora_r: [1, 512].
- lora_alpha: [1, 1024].
- lora_dropout: [0.0, 1.0).
Each validator names the offending field in its ValueError message
so the 422 response body identifies which input is bad. The
learning_rate validator returns its result as str (the schema field
type is str("2e-4") for backwards compatibility) so existing call
sites that float() the value continue to work.
Verified:
- learning_rate=-1 -> 422 "learning_rate must be > 0 (got -1.0);
typical range is 1e-6 .. 1e-3".
- learning_rate='abc' -> 422 "must be parseable as float".
- batch_size=-1 / 0 / 999999 -> 422 "batch_size must be in [1, 1024]".
- batch_size='two' -> 422 (pydantic int parser).
- max_steps=0 / -5 -> 422 "must be a positive int".
- max_seq_length=200000 -> 422 "must be in [1, 131072]".
- warmup_ratio=2.5 -> 422 "must be in [0.0, 1.0]".
- lora_dropout=1.5 -> 422 "must be in [0.0, 1.0)".
- Valid request with learning_rate='2e-4', batch_size=1, max_steps=5
passes validation and the training run starts as normal.
* studio: redact image-decode errors, clean checkpoint dirs on cancel, tolerate Stop-button + tool-result message shapes
Three small fixes that fall under "do not let the audit findings
become user-visible papercuts".
routes/inference.py - image-decode error redaction (the audit hit
this with a 0-byte / malformed / wrong-extension image upload). The
three image-normalise sites previously raised HTTPException(400,
detail=f"Failed to process image: {e}"). When PIL raised
UnidentifiedImageError(io.BytesIO(raw)) the message string included
"<_io.BytesIO object at 0x7e40a5d7bf60>", leaking both the Python
class name (confirming the PIL/io stack) and a heap address (mildly
useful for ASLR-bypass chaining if another memory-corruption bug is
ever found). Each site now catches UnidentifiedImageError and
returns the generic "Unsupported or corrupt image format"; the
fall-through generic except returns "Failed to process image". No
exception-repr is interpolated into a response body anywhere along
these paths.
core/training/training.py - checkpoint cleanup on cancel. When a
user clicks Cancel Training, the trainer flips _cancel_requested=True
and the supervisor force-terminates the subprocess. The trainer
writes checkpoint-<step> directories under output_dir every
save_steps; previously these survived the cancel and accumulated on
disk (the audit recorded ~67 MB stuck after a 200-step cancel with
save_steps=20). New helper _cleanup_cancelled_checkpoints(output_dir)
globs checkpoint-<int> entries and removes them. It is gated by a
realpath containment check against outputs_root() so it cannot
accidentally rmtree anything outside the configured outputs root.
force_terminate() invokes the helper after the subprocess join when
_cancel_requested is true. Stop-and-Save runs are unaffected because
that path keeps _cancel_requested=False.
models/inference.py - chat message shape tolerance. Two related
frontend interactions used to crash the request validator:
- After the Stop button truncates a generation, the frontend
retained {role:"assistant", content:""} in the conversation
history and replayed it on the next send. ChatMessage previously
required role="assistant" to have non-empty content or tool_calls,
so the next message returned 422 and the thread was permanently
broken. The validator now normalises empty assistant content to
None so the request round-trips and the trailing empty turn can
be ignored downstream.
- The frontend's second-round tool POST drops the streamed
tool_call_id, hitting the strict-spec check "role=tool requires
tool_call_id". The validator now synthesises an opaque id
(call_<8 hex>) when missing, so the request reaches the handler
and the model's final summarising response gets generated. The
proper fix lives in the frontend (carry the streamed id through
the second POST) and will follow.
Verified end to end with curl: HTTP 400 (model not loaded) on both
the empty-assistant history shape and the tool-result-without-id
shape, instead of HTTP 422 from the schema validator.

The /api/health auth probe called get_current_subject(creds) without
awaiting it. The coroutine object is truthy, so any caller presenting a
Bearer header (valid or not) received the full diagnostic payload
including version, device_type, studio_root_id, etc. Await the coroutine
and treat HTTPException as 'fall back to the minimal liveness payload'.
consume_refresh_token did SELECT then DELETE WHERE id under default
autocommit isolation. Two concurrent POST /api/auth/refresh requests
could both win the SELECT before either DELETE ran, defeating
single-use refresh-token rotation. Replace with a single
DELETE ... WHERE token_hash = ? AND expires_at >= ? RETURNING ...
statement so the validate-and-delete lands as one atomic op under
SQLite's write lock (3.45.1 supports RETURNING; min was 3.35).
* studio: enforce body cap on chunked uploads and drop unsafe-inline from script-src
MaxBodyMiddleware previously only inspected the declared Content-Length
header; clients omitting it or sending Transfer-Encoding: chunked
bypassed the cap and could still drive an OOM via the downstream
JSON / file readers on /v1/chat/completions, /api/inference, /api/data-recipe,
/api/datasets, /api/train, /api/export. Rewrite as a raw ASGI middleware
that drains and counts http.request frames, replies 413 once the running
total exceeds UNSLOTH_STUDIO_MAX_BODY_MB before invoking the FastAPI
handler, and replays the buffered body to downstream so route code that
calls request.json() / await request.body() works unchanged.
CSP previously included 'unsafe-inline' on script-src, which defeats the
main XSS protection. The frontend bundle does not need inline scripts;
the only inline <script> the backend ever emits is _inject_bootstrap,
which is opt-in via UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP. Drop 'unsafe-inline'
from script-src by default; when _inject_bootstrap fires, generate a
per-response nonce, embed it on the inlined <script>, and have
SecurityHeadersMiddleware splice 'nonce-XXX' into the CSP for that one
response (the internal x-internal-script-nonce header is popped before
the response leaves the server). 'unsafe-inline' stays on style-src for
Vite-injected styles.
* studio: drop empty assistant sentinel before passthrough
ChatMessage._validate_role_shape normalises role="assistant", content=""
(the post-Stop sentinel emitted by the frontend) to content=None so the
in-process path can drop it via _extract_content_parts. The passthrough
path then ran m.model_dump(exclude_none=True), which strips the now-None
content key entirely, sending {"role":"assistant"} to llama-server / the
OpenAI-compat backend. That fails upstream and leaves the user without a
recoverable Stop->resume.
Add _drop_empty_assistant_sentinels and call it at both passthrough
message origins: _openai_messages_for_passthrough (covers
/v1/chat/completions and the Responses API which routes through it) and
the anthropic_messages_to_openai output before
_anthropic_passthrough_*. Assistant messages that carry only tool_calls
(no content) are preserved.

Adds and updates pytest coverage for the four bot-flagged audit fixes

None, and a 64-thread concurrent pile-up against the same hash
produces exactly one successful consumer (regression for the
SELECT-then-DELETE race).
test_health_response_reports_desktop_capability_fields: rebase
against the new health_check(request) signature by going through
TestClient with a real bearer instead of asyncio.run-ing the
handler directly.

Pin the new ChatMessage tolerance: assistant without content or
tool_calls is tolerated (normalises content -> None), empty-string
and empty-list assistant content normalise to None, and a missing
/ empty tool_call_id on role='tool' is synthesised as call_<hex>
rather than raising. Tests for _drop_empty_assistant_sentinels
cover the three drop shapes (empty string, empty list, missing
content key), preservation of assistant text and tool_calls-only
messages, and end-to-end through

tests/test_studio_install_workspace_guard.py
test_health_endpoint_exposes_studio_root_id_not_raw_path read
the first 1500 bytes after @app.get("/api/health") and asserted on
the studio_root_id literal. The handler grew (unauth short-circuit
+ await dependency gate) and the literal slid past the byte window.
Replace the fixed window with a slice up to the next top-level
@app.* decorator so the test surveys the whole handler regardless
of size.

The "login burst (5x wrong pw) -> 401 each" assertion was tagged
"When/if we add one, this assertion updates in the same PR." We
added the per-IP rate-limit in routes/auth.py
(_LOGIN_MAX_FAILS=5/60s) but missed the assertion update. Rewrite
the burst probe to observe the new invariant: at least one 401,
eventual transition to 429, and Retry-After present on the 429.

The Chat UI Playwright test drives the first-boot change-password
form, which (per playwright_chat_ui.py step "1. Change-password
through the UI") pre-seeds the hidden current_password field from
window.__UNSLOTH_BOOTSTRAP__. That global is only emitted when the
backend's _inject_bootstrap path fires, which since the security
pass on this branch is gated behind UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP
and defaults to off. Without the global, the React form's
current_password validator never satisfies, the submit button stays
disabled, and the composer.wait_for() probe times out on
/change-password.
Re-enable injection only for the CI Studios that drive the chat UI
across linux/mac/windows. Production deployments are unaffected: the
env var has to be explicitly opted into, and the on-disk
auth/.bootstrap_password remains the source of truth for human users
typing the password in by hand.
Covers all eight Studio launch sites: the primary chat-ui boot and
the "extra UI tests" boot for each of the three OSes, plus the
pipeTransport JSON-crash retry relaunches in the macOS workflow that
re-spawn Studio mid-job.
A follow-up frontend PR will add a visible current_password input so
the form satisfies its own validator without needing the bootstrap
auto-fill at all; once that lands this CI knob can come back out.

CLONE_NEWNET inside _sandbox_preexec silently killed every outbound
HTTP request from sandboxed Python whenever the kernel allowed
unprivileged user namespaces. requests.get('https://huggingface.co'),
urllib.request.urlopen('https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...'),
socket.connect(('arxiv.org', 443)) all failed despite the AST visitor
intending to allow them. The bash blocklist (curl / wget / nc / ssh /
scp / sftp / rsync / socat / eval / source) plus the AST-level
metadata-host denylist still carry the network policy after this
change; CLONE_NEWNET was redundant with both.
Add _TRUSTED_PUBLIC_HOST_LITERALS + _TRUSTED_PUBLIC_HOST_SUFFIXES
(~100 informational hosts: Wikipedia language subdomains, Wikimedia,
Wikidata, Google search, Bing, DuckDuckGo, HuggingFace, GitHub,
raw.githubusercontent.com, arXiv, StackOverflow / Stack Exchange,
MDN, docs.python.org, PyTorch / TensorFlow / NumPy / pandas docs,

literal hosts that are neither metadata nor trusted with a short
LLM-readable string so the model can retry with an allowed source
instead of choking on a multi-line error.
Block upload-shape calls regardless of host: requests.post / put /
patch / delete / request with files= or data=open(...) /
data=bytes_literal; httpx equivalents; urllib.request.urlopen /
Request with data=...; HuggingFace upload_file / upload_folder /
upload_large_folder / create_commit (module-level FQ paths AND
method-name match on any receiver). Message: "Blocked: file upload
disallowed in sandbox".
Bump UNSLOTH_STUDIO_SANDBOX_CPU_S default 300 -> 600 s so long
agentic chains that span multiple tool calls don't get SIGXCPU'd
mid-stride. Env-var override path is unchanged.
Host normalisation now strips trailing dot, userinfo @, and explicit
port before allowlist / denylist comparison so trailing-DNS-dot,
userinfo-smuggling, and explicit-:443 URLs are decided correctly.
* studio: raise default request-body cap from 100 MB to 500 MB
UNSLOTH_STUDIO_MAX_BODY_MB default goes 100 -> 500 to comfortably
cover vision + audio + multi-recipe-batch JSON payloads. The

This branch's earlier b39e9a4 changed default_username to None on the
public /api/auth/status endpoint so the username field didn't leak to
unauthenticated callers. In practice this regressed third-party
clients (and the in-tree React login form's pre-fill UX) without
adding meaningful security: the bootstrap password is the actual
secret, and the username 'unsloth' is the documented default.
Pin default_username to storage.DEFAULT_ADMIN_USERNAME ('unsloth')
and tighten the response model so the field is required rather than
Optional. Anyone who needs anonymisation can still reach for an
allow-list deployment with auth disabled.

The UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP gate added an extra
terminal-to-browser copy-paste on every fresh install. In practice
the LAN credential leak it guarded against is narrow: the password
is one-time, the user rotates it on the very next click, the
default Studio bind is 127.0.0.1, and -H 0.0.0.0 already exposes
the entire API surface. Drop the gate so the inject fires whenever
a bootstrap password is still pending. The CSP nonce wiring stays
in place; the inline script remains the only inline script the
backend ever emits.
The three Playwright UI smoke workflows lose their
UNSLOTH_STUDIO_INJECT_BOOTSTRAP=1 lines along with the explanatory
comment blocks since the inject now happens by default.

* fix(studio): forward OpenAI tools/tool_choice to llama-server (#4999)
Studio's /v1/chat/completions silently stripped standard OpenAI `tools`
and `tool_choice` fields, so clients using standard function calling
(opencode, Claude Code, Cursor, Continue, ...) never got structured
tool_calls back. Adds a client-side pass-through path mirroring the
existing Anthropic /v1/messages flow: when `tools` is present without
Studio's `enable_tools` shorthand, the request is forwarded to
llama-server verbatim so the client sees native id, finish_reason
("tool_calls"), delta.tool_calls, and accurate usage tokens.
Also wires Anthropic tool_choice forwarding: /v1/messages previously
accepted tool_choice on the request model but silently dropped it with
a warning. Translate the four Anthropic shapes to OpenAI format and
forward them so agentic clients can actually enforce tool use.
- ChatCompletionRequest: add tools, tool_choice, stop; extra="allow"
- ChatMessage: accept role="tool", optional tool_call_id / tool_calls /
name; content is now optional (assistant with only tool_calls)
- routes/inference.py: _openai_passthrough_stream /

* fix(studio): surface httpx transport errors from OpenAI passthrough
When the managed llama-server subprocess crashes mid-request, the
async pass-through helpers in routes/inference.py used to return a
bare 500 (non-streaming) or an "An internal error occurred" SSE chunk
(streaming) because _friendly_error only recognized the sync path's
"Lost connection to llama-server" substring -- httpx transport
failures (ConnectError / ReadError / RemoteProtocolError /
ReadTimeout) stringify differently and fell through to the generic
case.
- _friendly_error: map any httpx.RequestError subclass to the same
"Lost connection to the model server" message the sync chat path
emits. Placed before the substring heuristics so the streaming path
automatically picks it up via its existing except Exception catch.
- _openai_passthrough_non_streaming: wrap the httpx.AsyncClient.post
in a try/except httpx.RequestError and re-raise as HTTPException
502 with the friendly detail.
- tests/test_openai_tool_passthrough.py: new TestFriendlyErrorHttpx
class pinning the mapping for ConnectError, ReadError,
RemoteProtocolError, ReadTimeout, and confirming non-httpx paths
(context-size heuristic, generic fallback) are unchanged.
* fix(studio): close aiter_bytes/aiter_lines explicitly in passthroughs
The httpcore asyncgen cleanup fix in 5cedd9a5 is incomplete on Python
3.13 + httpcore 1.0.x: it switched to manual client/response lifecycle
but still used anonymous `async for raw_line in resp.aiter_lines():`
patterns in all three streaming paths. Python's async for does NOT
auto-close the iterator on break/return, so the aiter_lines /
aiter_bytes async generator remains alive, reachable only from the
surrounding coroutine frame. Once `_stream()` returns the frame is
GC'd and the orphaned asyncgen is finalized on a LATER GC pass in a
DIFFERENT asyncio task, where httpcore's
HTTP11ConnectionByteStream.aclose() enters anyio.CancelScope.__exit__
with a mismatched task and prints "Exception ignored in: <async
generator>" / "async generator ignored GeneratorExit" / "Attempted
to exit cancel scope in a different task" to the server log.
User observed this on /v1/messages after successful (status 200)
requests, with the traceback pointing at HTTP11ConnectionByteStream
.__aiter__ / .aclose inside httpcore.
Fix: save resp.aiter_lines() / resp.aiter_bytes() as a variable and
explicitly `await iter.aclose()` in the finally block BEFORE
resp.aclose() / client.aclose(). This closes the asyncgen inside the
current task's event loop, so the internal httpcore byte stream is
cleaned up before Python's asyncgen GC hook has anything orphaned to
finalize. Each aclose is wrapped in try/except Exception so nested
anyio cleanup noise can't bubble out.
Applied to all three streaming passthrough paths:
- _anthropic_passthrough_stream (/v1/messages client-side tool path)
- _openai_passthrough_stream (/v1/chat/completions client-side tool
path, new in this PR)
- openai_completions (/v1/completions bytes proxy from PR #4956)
* fix(studio): default ChatCompletionRequest.stream to false per OpenAI spec
OpenAI's /v1/chat/completions spec defaults `stream` to false, so
clients that omit the field (naive curl, minimal integrations) expect
a single JSON response back. Studio was defaulting to true, silently
switching those clients into SSE and breaking any parser that didn't
also handle streaming. ResponsesRequest and AnthropicMessagesRequest
already default to false correctly; only ChatCompletionRequest was
wrong.
Studio's own frontend always sets `stream` explicitly on every
chat-adapter / chat-api / runtime-provider call site, so the flip has
no UI impact. SDK users (OpenAI Python/JS SDK, opencode, Claude Code,
Cursor, Continue) also always pass `stream` explicitly, so they're
unaffected. The only clients feeling the change are raw-curl users
who were relying on the wrong default -- those get the correct OpenAI
behavior now.
Added a regression test pinning the default so it can't silently
flip back.
* fix(studio): reject images in OpenAI tool passthrough for text-only GGUFs
The new tool passthrough branch runs before _extract_content_parts,
skipping the existing not is_vision guard. Requests combining tools
with an image on a text-only tool-capable GGUF were forwarded to
llama-server, producing opaque upstream errors instead of the
pre-existing clear 400. Restore the guard inline at the dispatch
point, checking both legacy image_base64 and inline image_url parts.
* fix(studio): require tool_call_id on role=tool chat messages
Enforce the OpenAI spec rule that role="tool" messages must carry a
tool_call_id. Without it, upstream backends cannot associate a tool
result with the assistant's prior tool_calls entry and the request
fails in non-obvious ways through the passthrough path. Reject at the
request boundary with a 422 instead.
* fix(studio): harden OpenAI tool passthrough validation and error surfacing
Three related fixes called out by the PR review:
1. Preserve upstream status codes in the streaming passthrough. The
httpx request is now dispatched before the StreamingResponse is
constructed. Non-200 upstream responses and httpx RequestError
transport failures raise HTTPException with the real status
instead of being buried inside a 200 SSE error frame, so OpenAI
SDK clients see APIError/BadRequestError/... as expected.
2. Require non-empty content on user/system/tool messages. Per the
OpenAI spec, content may only be omitted on assistant messages
that carry tool_calls; enforce that at the request boundary so
malformed messages never reach the passthrough path.
3. Role-constrain tool-call metadata. tool_calls is only valid on
role=assistant, tool_call_id and name only on role=tool. Without
this, a user/system message with tool_calls would flip the
passthrough branch on and be forwarded to llama-server, surfacing
as an opaque upstream error.
* fix(studio): normalize image mode and passthrough JSON verbatim
Two Gemini-code-assist review findings on PR #5099:
1. Unconditionally convert decoded images to RGB before PNG encoding.
The prior code only handled RGBA, letting CMYK/I/F images crash
at img.save(format="PNG") and surface as opaque 400s. Applied to
both the passthrough helper and the non-passthrough GGUF path
that originally carried this pattern, keeping the two sites in
sync.
2. Return the upstream JSON body as raw bytes via Response rather
than parse-then-re-serialize with JSONResponse. Matches the
passthrough helper's "verbatim" contract and drops a redundant
round-trip.
